WASHINGTON – As a pro-life leader on Capitol Hill, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) is working to secure passage of important pro-life protections in the FY2017 Omnibus Appropriations bill and set the stage for further legislative efforts to defund Planned Parenthood.

“In addition to extending the Hyde Amendment, the bipartisan funding bill includes specific provisions to keep your tax dollars from being used to pay for abortions in D.C., in federal prisons, and via foreign aid programs. We also make sure your tax dollars aren’t used for abortion litigation,” said Congressman Pittenger. “Already this year, we passed and President Trump signed legislation allowing states which value life and women’s health to shift Title X funding from Planned Parenthood clinics to the much more comprehensive network of Community Health Clinics.”

According to a memo from the National Right to Life Committee to Congressman Pittenger, the next step is to defund Planned Parenthood through a “reconciliation” bill, which requires only a simple majority in the Senate. The pending American Health Care Act is a reconciliation bill, and includes specific language to block most federal payments to Planned Parenthood.

“Life is precious and should never be casually discarded. By giving states flexibility to shift Title X funding away from Planned Parenthood, continuing pro-life protections in the bipartisan funding bill, and soon, defunding Planned Parenthood through reconciliation, we will support the unalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” said Congressman Pittenger.
