Congressman Robert Pittenger HeadshotWASHINGTON – America’s brave men and women in uniform volunteer to risk their lives in defense of our freedom and endure long separation from family and friends.  We owe them a debt we can never fully repay.

Today, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) joined a bipartisan majority to approve the largest military pay raise in six years, strengthen military health care for both active duty and retirees, and provide relief for brave veterans asked to repay enlistment bonuses.

The National Defense Authorization Act:

·         Provides $619 billion to appropriately fund our national defense

·         Stops President Obama’s reduction in military strength

·         Increases critical training to support readiness and reduce accidents

·         Provides resources to deter Russian aggression in Europe

·         Provides a full 2.1% pay raise for our troops

·         Makes no changes to out-of-pocket medical costs for military and retirees

·         Provides two comprehensive TRICARE options, simplifies access to urgent care, and extends hours for military primary care clinics

·         Reforms the organizational structure of the Department of Defense to better respond to modern-day national security threats

·         Continues the prohibition on closing GITMO and transferring radical terrorists to U.S.

“We are proud to have the finest military in the world, and the finest troops deserve a pay raise, as well as the training and resources they need to carry out dangerous missions on our behalf,” commented Congressman Pittenger.  “The 2017 National Defense Authorization Act supports our troops, ends dangerous cutbacks which hurt readiness, provides funding to continue the fight against radical Islamist terrorism, and includes common sense reforms to help the military meet 21st Century challenges.”

The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 passed the U.S. House of Representatives by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 375-34.
