WASHINGTON – Today, the United Nations General Assembly voted to condemn President Donald Trump’s reality-based decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09), who has worked for several years to push back against anti-U.S. and anti-Israeli voting blocs at the U.N., issued this statement:

“Once again, many of our ‘friends’ at the U.N. are voting against the United States and Israel.  We should look closely at holding these countries accountable with respect to the significant U.S. foreign aid they receive.

“Jerusalem has been Israel’s capital since the time of King David.  Israel’s legislature and courts are in Jerusalem.  Why should we continue to pretend otherwise?”

Congressman Pittenger is drafting legislation to prohibit U.S. foreign aid funds from going to countries who consistently oppose the United States and Israel at the United Nations.

Today, Congressman Pittenger joined Representatives DeSantis (FL-06), Martha McSally (AZ-02), and Lee Zeldin (NY-01) to introduce the Recognition of Jerusalem as the Capital of the State of Israel Act, which reaffirms U.S. policy recognizing Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel and eliminates the President’s authority to grant waivers regarding a U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem.
