WASHINGTON – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) had this statement after House Speaker Paul Ryan pulled the American Health Care Act from consideration:

“Speaker Ryan has been magnanimous throughout this very difficult process, and he made the right decision in pulling the bill.  We do not have adequate votes to pass.  If the vote had failed, we could not bring it up again under the special Senate rules requiring only a majority vote, instead of 60 votes.

“Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail for those who insisted the legislation contain 100 percent of their views.  Our great conservative icon, Ronald Reagan, understood government by consensus, often commenting that he would gladly accept 80 percent and declare victory.  We need a more considerate and thoughtful commitment to governing if we are to be successful.”
