WASHINGTON – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09), who represents Charlotte on the House Financial Services Committee, today questioned Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf regarding the opening of new accounts without customer authorization.  Charlotte is Wells Fargo’s largest employee base, with more than 23,000 employees in the region.

“You have a major presence in our community, and that’s why today is such a sad day.  I know it is for you.  I’m sure as you look back on these 35 years and where you are today, you think ‘what if?’  I’m asking as if you were sitting in our seat.  We represent these people.  You’ve heard a lot of outrage.  A lot of righteous indignation because we haven’t seen what we’ve all expected.”

During today’s questioning, Congressman Pittenger reminded Mr. Stumpf of the Henry Wells quote displayed in Wells Fargo’s SouthPark branch:  “We have one very powerful business rule, it is concentrated in one word:  courtesy.”
