CHARLOTTE – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) released this statement as he reflects on the 17th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks:

“We forget how complacent America had become, confident in a false sense of peace and security that was shattered at 8:46 a.m. on September 11th.  Yet 17 years later, some are once again becoming complacent, with foolish calls to abolish ICE and American companies selling critical technology to foreign adversaries.

“On September 11, 2001, brave American citizens and first-responders stood up to radical Islamic terrorists and proclaimed through their actions that America stands for freedom and liberty.  Let us never forget the lives lost, or the bravery of the first-responders, or the heroism of our soldiers who took the fight to Osama Bin Laden.

“Let us also remember their spirit as we face challenges in 2018 and beyond.  We do not live in fear.  We are a shining beacon for freedom and liberty.  Yet, we remain vigilant.”

Congressman Pittenger serves as Chairman of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, and Vice Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Terrorism and Illicit Finance.

He is the author, with Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, of the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act, which blocks malicious foreign investment into critical U.S. national defense technology and tightens controls on exports of that same technology to foreign adversaries.  President Trump supported Congressman Pittenger’s legislation and signed it into law as part of the National Defense Authorization Act.
