It’s been awhile since I’ve tried picking football games … if you consider more than two decades awhile. It used to be part of the job many, many years ago so let’s see if I can knock off the rust in post-retirement life. I’m not really counting on it, but we’ll have some fun along the way.

Any game played this season should be considered a win as COVID-19 quarantines are in play. West Bladen’s scheduled game tonight at South Columbus has been postponed because the Knights are under quarantine.

Just to add to the potential woes. There are chances of scattered thunderstorms in the area tonight. If this was golf, we’d use our mulligan on 2021.

Let’s kick things off.

WALLACE-ROSE HILL AT EAST BLADEN — No cupcake opener for these tradition-filled programs. East Bladen missed the playoffs for the first time in 21 years in the spring because of the pandemic shortened season and reduced playoff field. The Eagles should field another strong squad this season.

East Bladen will be tested against the Bulldogs. Wallace-Rose Hill has won seven state championships with the last coming in 2017. The Bulldogs beat East Bladen 44-0 in 2019. Don’t expect such a one-sided game tonight. Wallace-Rose Hill 21, East Bladen 13.

Other games

Midway 35, Hobbton 14

Clinton 42, Goldsboro 13

Douglas Byrd 14, Red Springs 8

Fairmont 21, White Oak 16

Whiteville 13, North Brunswick 7

Pender 26, Lejeune 7

Topsail 24, Trask 8

East Columbus 20, Rocky Mount Prep 12

Let’s see how it goes. Best of luck to all teams for a safe and healthy season.
