Couch Potato: With Heat Index Values Around 100, It’s Time For Fall Sports Practices

By Sonny Jones

Today’s weather forecast calls for a high near 94 with heat index values as high as 100, which can mean only one thing … it’s time to start practice for high school fall sports teams.

Nothing says fall sports season like a steaming, humid August day outside practicing football, boys’ soccer or girls’ tennis. At least volleyball players practice their sport inside.

First games for “fall” sports take place the week of Aug. 15. Don’t think it will feel like fall by then either.

Of course, it’s the same story every year so let’s lace ’em up, practice hard and get ready to play. More importantly, take precautions in dealing with the heat.

Here are today’s practice start times for Bladen County’s two high schools:

FOOTBALL
West Bladen 5 p.m., East Bladen 6 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL
West Bladen 9 a.m., East Bladen 4 p.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER
West Bladen 6 p.m., East Bladen 6:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
East Bladen 8:30 a.m., West Bladen 3:30 p.m.

Note from the Dixie Youth Baseball Division 2 World Series: It’s possible that Bladen County could play West Onslow in the championshp game Wednesday. For that to happen, Bladen County would need to win Tuesday’s game and West Onslow would need to win games Monday and Tuesday. Bladen County defeated West Onslow twice in the state tournament.

MONDAY’S PICK TO CLICK

Freddie Freeman is red-hot. The former Braves first baseman has a .415 batting average with 3 home runs and 10 RBIs in his last 15 games with the Dodgers. He’s also 5-for-12 in his career against San Francisco starting pitcher Logan Webb. Adds up to a couple of hits and a couple of RBIs tonight for Freeman.

SUNDAY’S PICK: Chris Buescher has finished inside the top six in the two previous Cup road-course races this season. That’s a track record — pardon the pun — that will put him in the top 5 at the checkered flag at Indy and, maybe, his first win of the season and a spot in the playoffs. RESULTS: Buescher finished a solid 10th after falling a couple of laps behind when his car caught fire in the pits on lap 12. He was 34th after the second stage.

WHAT TO WATCH TODAY

HOCKEY: U-18 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, United States vs. Finland, 5 p.m., NHLN

MLB: Boston Red Sox at Houston Astros, 8 p.m., ESPN
