The Bladen County Board of Commissioners met on Monday night and following the swearing-in ceremony for newly elected and returning commissioners, they recognized Drusilla Wright for her retirement. Wright has worked with the county for 29 years first at the Bladen County Health Department and then with the Department of Social Services.

DSS Director Vickie Smith said that when she joined DSS more than 18 years ago, Wright was one of first people she met. “She and I are the last of originals,” said Smith.

Wright began her career in 1987 with WIC and working for the health department. She left health department for three days while working at the Department of Corrections Center and then joined the staff at DSS. Wright began her career at DSS in the foster care unit and worked her way up to the role of supervisor. Smith said that Wright has always wanted to open an emergency shelter in Bladen County.

Wright was presented a plaque by Bladen County Commissioner Chairman Charles Ray Peterson recognizing her retirement which was effective on December 1.
Wright requested the staff of the Foster Care Unit who were present to come forward. Wright took a moment to recognize and thank her co-workers.

“I just want them to be recognized,” said Wright.
