Due to impending inclement weather, the County of Bladen is now under an ICE STORM WARNING from midnight tonight until noon on Saturday, January 22nd. Ice accumulations will make traveling extremely hazardous if not impossible. Scattered to numerous power outages and tree damage will likely occur. Bladen county residents should make necessary preparations TODAY for this event. Preparations include:

  • Obtaining an alternate heat source in the event of power interruption
  • Having medications on hand for several days
  • Having an alternate power source for required medical equipment
  • Having adequate food and water on hand

Ice storms lead to harm in many ways including: Fallen trees/large limbs/power lines, dangerous driving conditions, exposure to the cold, and carbon monoxide poisoning. Never use grills indoors (or garages), make sure generators are away from the building and properly ventilated, and never place heaters near flammable objects.

Travel can be especially hazardous with vehicles sliding off the roadway. Bridges, overpasses, and other elevated roads will be particularly dangerous as these spots typically ice-over before other roads. Any trees, limbs, and/or power lines that fall across the road would increase travel hazards.

Residents are encouraged to limit 9-1-1 calls to absolute medical emergencies and to expect an extended response time.
