FAYETTEVILLE – West Bladen got its first look at its 2018 team Thursday in the Cumberland County Football Jamboree.
While the Knights were scored upon four times by Gray’s Creek and didn’t score against the Bears in the one-hour scrimmage at Jack Britt High School, second-year coach Kris Williams’ team had the chance to check its progress ahead of its Aug. 24 opener against South Brunswick at the Castle.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Williams said. “Nothing bad happened that we can’t fix. We’re going to look at the video and see what we’ve got to fix and get to work.”
Officially, no score is kept in scrimmages and there is no special teams play allowed.
One area that Williams had a good look at is the passing ability of junior quarterback Tyre Boykin.
“We want to try to spread it out a little bit more,” Williams said. “We’re kind of moving in that direction, but we’re still going to be run heavy. We’re just trying to see where we are with it.”
Boykin completed several passes, many coming on rollouts. The Knights also showed they were willing to throw the ball down the field.
Defensively, the Knights gave up a touchdown on Gray’s Creek first possession in half-field scrimmage on a run by Gavin Freeman. The Bears struck for two more scores on its second set of 10 plays with quarterback Ben Lovette passing to Daniel Winningham for a TD, then running for a TD.
“Defensively, we’ve just got to fill some holes a little bit better,” Williams said. “The kids are a little bit hesitant. But overall, first scrimmage, nowhere to go but up from here.”
It will be West Bladen’s lone scrimmage prior to the start of the season. Williams had tried to line up a second scrimmage, but it didn’t work out.
West Blaen was 4-7 last season, including 2-7 in the Three Rivers 1A/2A Conference.
