D. J. Mason Posts 16 Points & 8 Rebounds for Campbell
West Bladen grad D. J. Mason pumped in 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, but his Campbell Camels dropped a tough 70-67 decision Monday night to Big South Conference leader Coastal Carolina at Buies Creek.
Mason also dished out 4 assists for the Camels who had a tying 3-point shot bounce off the rim at the buzzer.
The 6-6 junior dropped in a pair of first-half lay-ups as the Camels built their biggest lead of the night at 26-12 with 5:19 remaining before halftime.
After Coastal closed the gap to 33-27 at intermission, Mason started the second half with a jump shot and a free throw that kept the Campbell lead at 36-29.
Shivaughn Wiggins who led the Chanticleers with 22 points put the visitors ahead at 40-39, but Mason sank 2 free throws and added a lay-up for a 43-40 Campbell lead with 12:46 on the clock.
A pair of Mason foul shots at the 11:31 mark kept the Camels on top 48-45. However Coastal battled back and built a 68-62 lead, before Mason drained a 3-point shot with 44 seconds left to slice the margin to 68-65.
The Camels will host Radford Thursday at 7 p.m. in their next game.
