D J MasonWest Bladen grad D. J. Mason fired in 16 points Friday night, but his Campbell University Camels dropped a 73-65 Big South overtime game at Gardner-Webb.

The Camels led 53-44 with 2:44 remaining in regulation, but the Bulldogs used a 10-1 closing spurt to force the overtime session. Gardner-Webb then scored the first 11 points of the extra period.

Mason dropped in 2 lay-ups and a trio of free throws as the Camels took an early 11-5 lead. The Clarkton native added another lay-up to finish with 9 first half points as Campbell maintained a 25-21 lead.

Two more Mason lay-ups stretched the margin to 29-21 two minutes into the second half. Mason drained a 3-point shot with 6:11 left to keep the Camel lead at 48-39.

Mason also collected 3 rebounds, 2 assists and one blocked shot.

Tuesday night Mason tossed in 13 points as the Camels defeated Presbyterian 66-53. The 6-6 junior added 3 rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Mason slammed in two dunks, buried a 3-point shot, and added two lay-ups to ring up 11 first-half points as the Camels took a 30-23 halftime lead.

Mason also added a second-half lay-up.

The Camels travel to Liberty on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. game.
