West Bladen grad D. J. Mason fired in 19 points Saturday, but his Campbell Camels dropped an 82-75 Big South Conference decision to Charleston Southern.
Mason connected on 5 of 8 shots from the field and sank 8 of 9 free throws. The 6-6 senior grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 4 assists.
The Clarkton native opened the game with a lay-up then dropped in another lay-up with 11:42 left in the half for a 10-8 Camel lead.
Mason made another lay-up, popped in a jumper and cashed in 2 free throws that stretched the Campbell lead to 27-19. Two more Mason free throws kept the Camels up 34-30 at halftime.
The Campbell center made 2 free throws then drilled in a 3-point shot for a 43-40 lead with 16:54 left to play. Mason delivered 2 more free throws with 6:21 left that kept the Camels ahead 70-66.
Charleston Southern answered with an 11-0 spurt to take a 77-70 lead and held on for the victory.
Thursday night Mason threw in 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, but the Camels lost to Longwood 74-57.
Mason was 6 for 15 from the field against Longwood and had one assist and one steal.
The Camels travel to Radford, VA Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. game.
