West Bladen grad D. J. Mason posted a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds Saturday to lead Campbell past defending Big South champion Coastal Carolina 79-73 in the league opener for both teams in Buies Creek.
Mason tallied 5 points on a jump shot, a lay-up and a free throw and grabbed 4 rebounds in the first half which ended with Campbell trailing 41-35.
The Clarkton native tipped in a rebound then worked the paint for a trio of lay-ups to keep the Camels within 57-52 midway the second half.
Mason muscled in a rebound basket to tie the game 57-57 with 9:46 left to play. Coastal went back on top 64-62, but Mason tossed in a one-hand turn-around jumper from the lane to tie the game a final time at 64-64 and start a 12-2 Camel run that clinched the victory.
Mason connected on 8 of 12 shots from the field for the game.
The Camels, now 3-2 overall, will host VMI Monday at 7 p.m.
