North Carolina Highway Patrol, Trooper Kevin Conner

District Attorney Jon David announced a second suspect has been arrested in connection to the shooting of a North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper.

David’s office announced the arrest of Chauncey Askew, 18, on Tuesday morning but did not specify his exact involvement in the shooting death of NC Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Conner.

A press conference is scheduled for 12 noon at the Columbus County Courthouse in Whiteville.

Raheem Davis, 20, of Chadbourn, was arrested and charged with first degree murder. He is being held without bond.

Davis was stopped by Trooper Conner for a speeding violation, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. As Trooper Conner walked up to the vehicle he was shot in the face and torso by Davis, who left the scene.  Davis was spotted by Fair Bluff Police Officers who chased Davis, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. The pick-up truck Davis was driving became stuck on a set of railroad tracks and he jumped out and ran. He was later apprehended by Fair Bluff Police.

It was learned during the investigation the pick-up truck Davis was driving was reported as stolen.
