On Thursday, June 18, Bladen County Sheriff’s Deputy Jessica Portalatin was traveling south on Chickenfoot Road in Cumberland County when she observed a female lying in the ditch with two other people around her. Deputy Portalatin stopped to assist the female who was lying on the ground, face down on her stomach. Based on the information observed at the scene, Portalatin believed that she had possibly overdosed on a controlled substance.

Deputy Portalatin administered a dose of Narcan nasal spray to her through her nostril. She then began to regain consciousness and was assisted to an upright position. Cumberland County EMS was contacted and she was transported to the hospital to be treated.

Bladen County Sheriff’s Deputies are issued the nasal Narcan drug for use on people that have overdosed from a suspected opioid. The Narcan has been donated to local law enforcement and EMS by EastPointe Health Care.

“I am very proud of Deputy Portalatin and all of the members of the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office who do a great job daily”. “Narcan is a great tool for our deputies to help save a life and I am appreciative of EastPointe for donating Narcan to us”, said Sheriff Jim McVicker.
