School-Bus1Bladen County Schools says an on-board distraction, and not excessive speed, caused a driver of a school bus to veer off the road and tip onto its right side Friday afternoon. Bladen Online reported on the night of the incident that the bus had tipped onto its left side.

The accident, which occurred along Mercer Mill Brown Marsh Road about 3:30 p.m., sent 18 students to Bladen County Hospital, mostly as a precautionary measure. The students were among 39 on the bus from Clarkton School of Discovery and Booker T. Washington Primary.

GPS data showed the bus traveling at 44 mph, according to Bladen County Schools. The posted speed limit is 55 mph.

The driver, whose name has not been released, is no longer driving a school bus while the investigation continues, Bladen County Schools said. The driver was not injured in the accident.
