RIEGELWOOD – Elizabethtown held off a last inning Whiteville rally and posted an 11-9 victory Saturday in the opening round of the District 2 Dixie Youth Baseball Supplemental Tournament.
Elizabethtown took an 11-3 lead into the fourth and final inning, before Whiteville rallied for 6 runs and trimmed the final margin to 11-9.
Carson Gooden pitched the first 3 innings and struck out seven batters to pick up the win. Lee Barnes relieved Gooden and pitched the final inning to earn the save.
Gooden and Zee Lewis connected for two hits each to lead the Elizabethtown hitters. Barnes, Jacob Nixon, Donovan Burton, Elijah Can and Will Harrelson belted one hit each. Hunter Smith and Andrew Horne drew 2 walks each and scored 2 runs each.
Elizabethtown will play Columbus County Sunday at 5 p.m. in a winner’s bracket game.
