RIEGELWOOD –Whiteville pulled away late to claim a 10-2 victory over Bladen County in the opening round of the District 2 Dixie Youth Baseball Tournament.
 
Michael Young started on the mound for Bladen County and held Whiteville to only 3 runs through the fifth inning. “Michael pitched a good game today and kept us within 3-1,” said Bladen County Coach Jerry Strange. “We did not hit the ball that great, and we need to focus on hitting the ball tomorrow.”
 
Bladen County scored a run in the first inning. Alex Strange cracked a one-out single, but was retired on Devon Strange’s fielder’s choice. Devon Strange stole second base, dashed to third on a passed ball and stole home on the back-end of a double-steal with Young who had walked.
 
In the Bladen sixth inning, Alex Strange and Devon Strange belted singles, and Young knocked in Alex Strange with a single to left-centerfield.
 
Alex Strange and Devon Strange both batted 2-3 to lead the Bladen County hitters. Shy Ratliff slammed a double, and Young smacked a run-scoring single.
 
Anthony Mitchell and James Edwards followed Young to the mound for Bladen County.
 
Bladen County will play Nakina Sunday at 2 p.m. in an elimination game.
