Britt Sasser raced home with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday night as the Red defeated the Royal 4-3 in Dixie Boys Baseball action at County Park.

Sasser was placed at second base due to the international tie-breaker rule that the league applies in extra innings. One out later Ja’Nathan Johnson lifted a pop-fly toward shortstop that was missed allowing Sasser to score.

The Royal grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Coleman Tatum walked and raced home on Garrison Tatum’s 2-out single.

In the Red half of the first, Hunter Elks belted a single, and Chase Knight and Walker Ward drew walks. Lee Barnes knocked in Elks with a single, and Jake Futrell drove in Knight for a 2-1 Reds lead.

Evan Pait slammed a double in the fourth inning that drove in Coleman Tatum who had walked. Pait also scored to edge the Royal ahead 3-2.

Knight walked, stole second and third bases and scored the tying run in the Reds sixth inning.

Elks and Barnes connected for one hit each for the Red. Barnes and Futrell drove in runs. Knight scored twice and Elks and Sasser scored one run each.

Pait doubled to lead the Royal hitters, and Garrison Tatum, Weston Hatcher and Parker Greene belted one hit each. Garrison Tatum and Pait drove in runs. Coleman Tatum scored twice and Pait scored a run.

Red 13, Navy 7

The Red pulled away with a 5-run fifth inning and defeated the Navy 13-7 in the Dixie Boys Baseball opener for both teams.

The Red jumped in front 7-0 in the top of the first inning. Hunter Elks cracked a single, Tyler Johnson reached base on an error and Zamar Lewis walked. Carson Gooden laced a single that scored Elks and Tyler Johnson.

Lewis stole home, and Walker Ward hammered a triple that scored Gooden. Chase Knight smacked a single that plated Ward. Knight stole second base and dashed home on Lee Barnes’ single. Jake Futrell walked, and Britt Sasser knocked in Barnes with a single.

The Navy answered with 5 runs in the bottom of the first. Devon Strange clobbered a 2-out triple, and Michael Young raked a single to left that scored Strange.

Stephen Matheson walked, and Wadeyn Norris swatted a single that scored Young. Riley Stanley drove in Matheson with a single, and Michael Peterson slugged a double that scored Norris and Stanley.

Tyler Johnson led off the Red third inning with a single and stole third base and home to pad the Red lead to 8-5.

Devon Strange and Young delivered one-out singles in the Navy half of the third. Strange stole home, and Norris clubbed a single that scored Young and trimmed the margin to 8-7.

Lewis smacked a single and stole his way around the bases to ignite the 5-run fifth inning for the Red. Gooden, Ward and Knight drew walks. Gooden stole two bases and sprinted home on a wild pitch. Ward and Knight both stole home, and Barnes lined a single to right-centerfield and later stole home for a 13-7 lead.

Ward batted 2-for-3 with a triple, a run batted in and 2 runs scored to lead the Red hitters. Barnes finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Elks, Tyler Johnson, Lewis, Gooden, Knight and Sasser added one hit each. Lewis, Tyler Johnson, Knight and Gooden scored 2 runs each, and Elks scored one. Gooden had 2 RBI, and Knight and Sasser had one RBI each.

Devon Strange batted 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 runs scored for the Navy. Young finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Norris batted 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Peterson doubled home 2 runs. Lukus Gillis doubled, and Stanley and Cameron Singletary added one hit each. Stanley had an RBI, and Matheson and Stanley scored one run each.
