A 5-run third-inning propelled South Brunswick to an 8-6 victory at West Bladen in Dixie Pre-Majors Baseball action Monday night.

West Bladen right-hander Trent West struck out the side in both the first and second innings, but a hit batter, a walk, 2 hits and a dropped fly ball helped the Cougars take a 5-1 lead in the top of the third.

Junior Caleb Sholar finished the third inning on the mound and pitched into the fourth, allowing a walk and 2 singles, before freshman Scott Bowen came on in relief. A Cougar double plated the final 2 runs and put the visitors ahead 8-1.

The Knight pitchers combined for 15 strike-outs – 8 by Bowen, 6 by West and one by Sholar.

Junior Jeremy Hunt walloped a lead-off triple in the first inning and scored when junior Troy Edge slammed a double for a 1-0 West Bladen lead.

The Knights scored 5 runs in the fourth to whittle the margin to 8-6. The inning began with six straight walks –to junior Chandler Lennon, junior Ray Jones, junior Seth Britt, freshman Jarrett Williams, sophomore Weston Pidgeon and catcher Brandon Carson.

Hunt cracked a 2-run single, and junior Donald McCullum brought home the final West Bladen run with a sacrifice fly.

Hunt batted 2-4 with a triple, 2 runs batted in and a run scored to lead the Knight hitters. Edge also finished 2-4 at the plate with a double and an rbi. Pidgeon and sophomore Hunter Pait connected for one hit each as the Knights totaled 6 hits. Williams, Pidgeon and McCullum had one rbi each.

The Knights, now 2-2, will host East Columbus tonight (Tuesday) at 6 p.m.
