Dixie Youth Baseball like many of our spring and summer sporting pastimes is currently in suspended mode due to the coronavirus.

DYB District 9 Director Carl Newkirk said, “We just have to wait for things to get better. Until the town feels that things have improved enough for us to be able to use the fields, we can’t practice or play games.”

Right now both District 9 (Elizabethtown) and District 2 (Clarkton, Bladenboro, Tar Heel, Dublin) are officially on hold until April 6th because that is the date that the NCHSAA has set for the possible resumption of high school sports but that date could change depending on the effects of the virus.

The scholarship practice games that were scheduled for March 27 will either be rescheduled or cancelled.

Newkirk shared that the season could still be played if the virus situation is resolved to where the government feels that practices and games could be played safely. “We need to be able to play about 10 games, and then have time to play district and state tournaments in time for the World Series in August.”

Realistically May 1st might be a key date. If play cannot be started by May 1st or soon thereafter then chances of salvaging the 2020 season will be seriously reduced.
