Dixie Youth Baseball Majors Division 2 World Series: Bladen County 13, Alabama 3

ANDERSON, SC –Bladen County pounded out 13 hits – 9 during a pivotal 9-run 3rd inning rally – and claimed a 13-3 mercy rule victory Sunday over the Alabama state champions in the Dixie Youth Baseball Majors Division 2 World Series.

Bladen County will have a bye Monday and advances to a 12:15 p.m. game Tuesday against the winner of Monday’s Lunenburg, Virginia/Amelia, Virginia game. Bladen County’s only loss was 2-1 to Lunenburg, the Virginia state champions. Bladen County had beaten the Alabama state runners-up 5-0 Friday in its opening game.

Bladen County jumped in front with 3 runs in the 1st inning. Chase Bryan reached base on an error, and Gauge King walked. Corben Chadwick pulled a single to left field to load the bases. Cole Brisson laced a single to left that scored Bryan. Luke Bryant’s fielder’s choice plated Gauge King, and Chadwick later stole home on the back end of a double-steal with Bryant.

Andrew Wren walloped a triple to right-center field to begin the Bladen 2nd inning and raced home on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.

A bloop double behind 1st base ignited a 3-run Alabama 3rd inning. A walk, a hit batter, a throwing error, a wild pitch and a single plated the 3 runs. However, a nifty double play started by shortstop Cole Brisson who fired to first baseman Chadwick to get the batter ended the inning. Chadwick then returned the ball quickly to second baseman Bryant who chased the lead runner before flipping the ball to third baseman Devan Stanley who tagged him out.

Bryan walked to start the 3rd inning explosion. Gauge King raked a single to left, and Chadwick belted a single to center field. Cole Brisson smashed a single through the middle that scored Bryan and Gauge King. Chadwick dashed home on a wild pitch, and Bryant drilled a shot off the pitcher that scored Cole Brisson.

Sawyer King laced a single to right-center field. Wren ripped a single over the 3rd base bag. Drake Gause forced Wren at second, but Sawyer King scooted all the way home from 2nd base on the play. Ashton Davis knocked in Gause with a double into the left field corner.

Bryan yanked a single to left that scored Davis, and Gauge King spanked a single to right-center field that plated Bryan. Chadwick swatted a single to left that scored Gauge King and stretched the Bladen lead to 13-3.

Chadwick batted a perfect 3-for-3 with a run batted in and 2 runs scored. Wren hammered the triple and finished 2-for-2 with a run scored. Gauge King scored 3 runs and batted 2-for-2 with an RBI. Cole Brisson drove in 3 runs with a 2-for-3 performance and scored a run.

Davis slammed the RBI double and scored a run. Bryan, Sawyer King and Gavin Brisson added 1 hit each to the 13-hit attack. Bryant drove in 2 runs, and Sawyer King and Bryan had 1 RBI each. Bryan scored 3 runs, and Sawyer King and Gause scored 1 run each.

Bryan started on the mound for Bladen County and pitched 2.1 innings allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, a walk and a hit batter while striking out two. Wren pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and gave up 2 hits. Besides the big double play that changed the game’s momentum in the 3rd inning, right fielder Gause made an outstanding diving catch while sliding across the foul line to start the 2nd inning.

West Onslow, the North Carolina state runners-up, lost its first game of the tournament 13-7 to Amelia, Virginia Sunday and will play Honea Path, SC Monday at 12:15 p.m.
