The employees at the North Carolina DMV Call Center located at the Elizabethtown Industrial Park collected 5,000 items including coats, hats, gloves and canned goods to donate to the Bladen County Department of Social Services and Bladen Crisis Assistance Food Bank.

DMV Supervisor Renee Summerlin said that an employee at the Call Center hand-knitted ten sets of hats and scarves. She added some of the members of the staff went shopping and purchased 35 coats.

“We’re very proud of every one’s hard work,” said Summerlin.

The drive was started on November 16 and ended on Friday, Dec. 17.

Summerlin explained that the Call Center’s staff is divided into teams and each team collected items.

“They worked hard (collecting items) and the winning team that collected the most items will get a pizza party.

Some of the teams challenged each other and the losing team will have to feed the winning team,” said Summerlin.

Summerlin said the canned food collected will be delivered to the Crisis Assistance Food Pantry later in the day on Monday.

The clothing and Christmas stockings packed with goodies such as personal hygiene items were presented to Department of Social Services Child Welfare Supervisor Janet Miller, Child Welfare workers Greta Murphy and Sonya Hopkins.

“The stockings are for adult wards the state has legal guardianship for, who like our foster children, don’t have a lot of family support,” said Miller.

She added, “This means a lot to them.”

Miller said the new coats will be distributed to the foster children.

“This turned out to be so beyond what we envisioned,” said DMV employee Jamie Campbell.
