Warsaw Solar Facility ImageDuke Energy is set to hold a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. in Warsaw for the largest utility-owned solar facility. The facility, which is spread out out over 500 acres of land, is located at 1078 Penny Branchy Road, Warsaw.

The Warsaw Solar facility is part of a more than $500 million expansion of solar energy by the company.

“Obviously we’re excited. This is the largest Duke Energy project we’ve got in Eastern North Carolina,” said Duke Energy Spokesman Randy Wheeless.

He said the new facility is a positive asset not only for the company but also for the citizens. Wheeless said that other large projects like the one in Warsaw are not outside the realm of possibility.

Wheeless said while other energy resources such as coal are still needed, he added there is no reason why renewable energy can not be a viable source of energy.

North Carolina currently ranks fourth in the nation for solar power.

“North Carolina is a leader in solar power,” said Wheeless.

He added that on “a good sunny day,” the Warsaw facility could potentially power as many as 13,000 homes.
