CLARKTON – Whiteville held on for a 12-7 victory over Elizabethtown Wednesday night in the championship game of the Dixie Youth Baseball District 2 Majors Supplemental Tournament.

Elizabethtown received the runner-up trophy for the tournament.

Whiteville scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to stretch a narrow 6-5 lead out to 12-5. Elizabethtown answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and had the bases loaded when the final out was recorded.

“We had them on the ropes, but just couldn’t land the knockout,” said Elizabethtown Coach James Daly.

After Whiteville went up 1-0, Colton Daly laced a two-out single in the bottom of the first, and Marcus Williams blasted a home run to left-center field that vaulted Elizabethtown in front 2-1.

Whiteville scored three runs in the second inning and single runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 6-2 lead.

Elizabethtown rallied with two runs in the fourth inning. Daly belted a single, and Williams reached base on an error. Tredon Scott knocked in Daly and Williams with a single to centerfield that sliced the lead to 6-4.

Jake Gooden and Isaiah Lee smacked singles in the Elizabethtown fifth inning, and Kewone Maynor cracked a single that scored Gooden and whittled the lead to 6-5.

Whiteville bunched two walks, a hit batter, two hits and an error to score six runs after two were out in the top of the sixth.

Williams slugged a solo home run in the Elizabethtown sixth inning, and Scott walked. Coley Sasser swatted a single, and Gooden and Collin King drew walks that forced home Scott with the final run.

Williams walloped the two home runs, drove in three runs and scored three runs for Elizabethtown. Daly batted 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Scott, Sasser, Gooden, Lee, Gabe Cashwell, and Maynor connected for one hit each.

Scott drove in two runs, and Maynor drove in a run. Scott and Gooden scored one run each.
