WHITEVILLE – Luke Bryant knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning, and Ashton Davis struck out 16 batters as Bladen County shutout Whiteville 1-0 Saturday in the opening round of the Dixie Youth Baseball District 2 Majors Tournament.
Bladen County receives a bye for Sunday and will face the winner of Sunday’s South Columbus/Columbus County game Monday at 8 p.m.
Chase Bryan walked to start the Bladen 7th inning, and 1 out later Davis was walked intentionally. One out later Bryant walked off the Bladen victory with a single to center field.
Davis started on the mound for Bladen and struck out 16 of the 18 batters that he faced as he no-hit Whiteville for 5.2 innings. Davis issued a 3rd inning walk, and 1 other batter grounded to first.
Bryan struck out a batter to end the 6th inning but issued a pair of walks to start the seventh. Cole Brisson relieved and pitched out of trouble with a strikeout and a double play. Davis, Bryan and Cole Brisson combined to pitch a no-hitter and strike out 18 batters with 3 walks.
Bryant batted 2-for-3 with the run batted in to lead the Bladen hitters. Bryan connected for the only other Bladen hit but also scored the game’s lone run.
