DYB District 9 Majors Tournament: West Robeson 7, Elizabethtown 3

ELIZABETHTOWN — West Robeson scored five runs in the fifth inning in beating Elizabethtown 7-3 on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Dixie Youth Baseball District 9 Majors tournament played at Leinwand Park.

The teams had played to a 2-all tie through four innings before West Robeson sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth, collecting five hits and taking advantage of two Elizabethtown errors to take the lead.

Elizabethtown scored once in the sixth when Cade Rogers walked, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on Seth Faircloth’s ground out to third.

Elizabethtown is scheduled to play Red Springs at 5 p.m. Sunday in an elimination game. Fairmont beat Red Springs 18-4. Fairmont is matched against West Robeson at 7 p.m.

The winner of the Elizabethtown-Red Springs game will play the loser of the Fairmont-West Robeson game on Monday in the tournament semifinals. The top two teams will advance to the state tournament.

In Saturday’s game, Elizabethtown’s Seth Faircloth pitched 4.2 innings, allowed five hits and only one earned run among the seven West Robeson scored. He struck out four and walked three. Rogers recorded the final out on the mound. Elizabethtown was charged with five errors.

Tyler Eason and Noah German each had a hit and run batted in to lead the Elizabethtown offense. Devance Tatum also had a hit for Elizabethtown. Omar Powell, Tatum and Rogers each scored a run. Faircloth drove in a run.

West Robeson pitchers Joseden Oxendine, Seth Brooks and Dakota Locklear combined on a three-hitter, struck out 11 and walked five. Oxendine and Drew Gause each had two hits.

West Robeson took a 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the first two innings, both scoring on two-out errors.

Elizabethtown scored in the third when Powell drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on German’s single to right.

Elizabethtown tied it in the fourth when Delton Murdock walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Courtesy runner Tatum scored on Eason’s two-out double to deep center.
