Girls Basketball

Senior Lacey Suggs scored 16 of her game-high 23 points in the second half as East Bladen’s unbeaten Lady Eagles rallied for a 50-44 non-conference girls basketball victory at East Columbus Friday night.

The Lady Gators led 25-21 at halftime, but the East Bladen defense limited East Columbus to only 6 points in the third period. Suggs and senior Christiana Cromartie fired in two baskets each, and senior Miller Heustess and junior Emily Scott added one bucket each as the Lady Eagles edged in front 33-31 at the quarter break.

Suggs sank 8 of 10 free throws in the final quarter and tossed in a pair of field goals to total 12 points in the period. Freshman Ja’Tyra Moore-Peterson added a basket and a free throw in the quarter.

Suggs finished with 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Cromartie totaled 8 points, 2 blocked shots and 3 steals. Heustess added 6 points, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Moore-Peterson tallied 5 points for the winners, and senior guard Abby Ward contributed 4 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Scott had 4 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

Six-two junior Charity Powell racked up 13 of her 20 points for East Columbus in the second half. Sophmore Tia Campbell pumped in 11 of her 13 points for the Lady Gators in the first half. Junior Marlena McClure finished with 8 points.

Campbell’s 6 points sparked the Lady Gators to an 11-8 first quarter lead. Suggs fired in 7 points in the second period to keep East Bladen within 25-21 at halftime. Five points each from Campbell and Powell in the second quarter kept East Columbus on top.

Coach Patty Evers’ Lady Eagles improved to 10-0 overall and will host Whiteville at 6:30 Monday in their own East Bladen Holiday Classic.
