East Bladen’s Lady Eagles travel to Clinton Tuesday night with a chance to take a 2-game lead in the Four County Conference Girls Basketball standings.

In their first meeting at East Bladen, the Lady Eagles (8-0 in conference, 18-0 overall and ranked No. 1 in NC Preps Class 2A State Rankings) rolled to a 58-30 victory behind 21 points from senior Lacey Suggs.

The Lady Dark Horses (6-1 in conference, 14-3 overall and ranked No. 10 in the NC Preps poll) are led by sophmore Alex Canady (20 points and 8 rebounds per game) and senior Brielle Mitchell (18 ppg).

There have been rumors that Clinton star MiKayla Boykin who averaged 25 points and 9 rebounds per game as a freshman would return at some point this season. Boykin, a Duke recruit, missed all of her sophmore season due to a knee injury and has not played thus far this season.

Suggs (21.5 ppg and 8 rpg) leads the East Bladen offense. Other Lady Eagle scoring leaders are senior guard Abby Ward (9 points and 7 assists per game), and freshman Ja’Tyra Moore-Peterson (8.1 ppg).

The Lady Eagles average 56 ppg, while giving up 27 ppg. Against Four County opponents East Bladen has an average winning margin of 58 to 28 ppg.

Of course the lop-sided margin of victory has sparked comments from opposing fans and some of them have found their way back to Lady Eagle Coach Patty Evers.

“My girls can’t sit out for a half and then expect to play full games when they get to the play-offs,” she said. “We are not trying to run up the score, but we have to get ready for the play-offs.”

An East Bladen victory Tuesday night would give the Lady Eagles that two-game lead with only five games remaining.
