“It felt great to keep the residents company. They were happy to have someone to converse with and it was so nice to see them smile,” said second year Cadet Jasmin Ransom. Cadet Ransom was one of forty JROTC Cadets who participated in a life changing event.  The Cadets from East Bladen High School JROTC went to Elizabethtown Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for a Service Learning Project on March 10, 2015. A Service Learning Project is one of the many events a JROTC program will accomplish during an academic year.  In a Service Learning Project, Cadets take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it outside of the school and in the community.

Two of the most important values taught in JROTC is one of selfless service and to be respectful towards others, especially our elders. Many of the Cadets learned that it is not the big things in life that make a person happy, but the small things. They learned this from the many activities that took place in the Dining Hall, Activity Room, and even in the facility corridors. Many residents were given manicures, baked goods, and even entertainment. The in-room residents were able to enjoy these pleasures through in-home visits. Cadets went to the residents rooms and enjoyed laughing with the residents and hearing stories from the residents past.

The Cadets went to Elizabethtown Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center as a part of a Service Learning Project.  However, this trip was more than a project, and according to Cadet Charlanna Coleman, “ it taught us Cadets a lesson and gave us a new outlook on life. We left the Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center taking pride in knowing that we helped many have a better day.”
