East Bladen High SchoolFreshman Sincere Smith and Junior Alex Coates combined on a 3-hit shutout as East Bladen edged visiting Red Springs 1-0 Monday in the first game of a non-conference baseball double-header. Red Springs battled back to win the nightcap 5-1.

Smith worked the first 4 innings on the mound for the Eagles, and Coates picked up the save with a scoreless fifth inning.

Freshman Ty Watkins cracked an opposite-field single to left-field that drove in senior Colby Hester with the only run of the game in the fourth inning.

Watkins started on the mound for the Eagles in the second game and received relief help from Coates and Matthew Massengill.

Sophomore Kyle Tatum slammed a double and scored the only Eagle run in the second game.

The Eagles missed some scoring chances as they left the bases-loaded in the fourth inning and put the first two runners on base in the fifth inning. However, a double play killed the fifth inning threat.

Coach Russell Priest’s Eagles are now 1-2 on the season and will travel to St. Pauls Wednesday at 5 p.m.
