East Bladen’s Lady Eagles opened their 2015 softball season with a 2-1 victory at Red Springs, but some defensive lapses helped the Lady Red Devils claim a 7-4 victory in the nightcap of their non-conference double-header Monday.

In the opener, the Lady Eagles scored a run in the second inning. Junior pitcher Miller Heustess reached base on an error, and sophomores Yolanda Coston and Emily Scott drew walks to load the bases. Senior Anna Brewer knocked in Heustess with a single.

Junior Lacey Suggs beat out a bunt single in the fifth inning and raced around to third base on a pair of throwing errors. Senior Lexi Dawson brought her home with a sacrifice fly.

Heustess pitched all 5 innings to pick up the win. Heustess struck out 3, walked one, hit a batter and allowed one run.

Suggs beat out 2 bunt singles, and Brewer delivered the run-scoring single to lead the East Bladen hitters.

Second-baseman Scott fielded a ground ball and started a game-ending double play with a toss to shortstop Abby Ward who fired the ball on to first-baseman Abbey Norris.

The Lady Red Devils scored 7 unearned runs – 4 in the fifth inning off of errors- to post the second game victory.

Suggs started in the circle for East and allowed 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out two. Heustess finished up and gave up one hit and one walk.

The Lady Eagles pushed across a pair of first inning runs as Ward, Norris and Dawson smacked singles. Dawson’s hit drove in Ward, and Norris scored on a throwing error.

In the East Bladen half of the fourth, Heustess walked, Coston was hit by a pitch and Scott reached base on a throwing error that plated Heustess. Scott sprinted home on a passed ball.

East Bladen will travel to St. Pauls Wednesday at 5 p.m.
