The selections for the 2017 Governor’s School have been announced and one Bladen County student will be taking part this summer.  Dylan P. Melvin, a student at East Bladen High School, was named to attend Governor’s School East and study Social Science. Melvin is the son of Michael “Lin” and Jennifer Melvin of Elizabethtown.

The Governor’s School East will meet at Meredith College this summer from June 18 to July 26. This group of juniors and seniors will study new ideas and concepts in academics and the arts. According to a release, the nomination process is as follows: “Local school superintendents, along with directors of charter and private schools initially nominate students to attend Governor’s School. The program is open to rising seniors only with exceptions made to include rising juniors in selected performing arts areas. Each school system, charter school and private school is allotted a certain number of nominations based on its 10th- and 11th-grade populations. There are 10 specialization areas for nomination: English, foreign language (French or Spanish), mathematics, natural science, social science, art, choral music, instrumental music, theater and dance.”

The Governor’s School meets on two campuses. Governor’s School East meets at Meredith College and Governor’s School West meets at Salem College in Winston-Salem.  No Bladen County students were named to attend the Govenor’s School West.
