Elizabethtown Christian Academy traveled to Greensboro on Sunday, February 5th to compete in the N.C. State Beta Club Convention. Sponsor, Mrs. Genia Hester was excited about the possibilities, and she did not return disappointed. “For a first year Beta Club, I didn’t want to overload the students and enter them into too many competitions. For us, it was a matter of exposing the children to the multiple possibilities in state competition,” stated Mrs. Hester. The ECA students were entered in ten competitions, and they traveled back home with five awards. “I’m sure there are new schools that do well in Beta competitions, but to come home with five awards is an incredible accomplishment,” declared Mrs. Bridgers, Head of the School. “These students are well-rounded as you can tell by the awards they won – talent, art, and academic,” she added.

The winning students are as follows: Michaella Troy – 3rd place in Division I poetry; Chandler Bordeaux – 2nd place in Division I science; Andrew Lin, Preston Mote, Clarence Norton, and Coley Sasser – 1st place in Division I Tower of Power; Miriam DeVane, Anna Gooden, Leah McGill, and Martha Simmons – 3rd place in Division I special talent; and Olivia Hill – 1st place in Division II color photography. The students also entered the t-shirt design competition, and landed into the top 15. “I couldn’t be more proud of all our students who competed. They represented ECA well, and you can’t ask for more than that as a sponsor,” said Mrs. Hester. The next step for these students will be the National Beta Club Convention, which will be held in Orlando from June 25-28.

The ECA students were not the only ones to walk away with an honor from the State Convention. Mrs. Hester, who has been a Beta sponsor for 17 years was voted to become the next N.C. Sponsor-elect. Mrs. Hester will work under the State Sponsor for the next two years, and then will take over the State Sponsor duties. “Mrs. Hester is one of the hardest working people I know. She has a passion for learning and a definite passion for Beta Club. I know she will serve the state of N.C. well,” stated Mrs. Bridgers.
