After 14 months of meetings and hard work, the Elizabethtown Zoning Ordinance Rewrite and Zoning Map Update was presented during a public hearing in September. The Town Council adopted the plan as presented during Monday evening’s regular council meeting.

During discussion, Howell Clark noted that “it is a good document, but not perfect”. Although he voted to approve the document, he did express concern that “we are keeping the most heavily traveled part of our town (the bypass) from being developed. People are passing right by without stopping in Elizabethtown.”

Mayor Sylvia Campbell said the rewrite will provide the Town staff with guidance in the orderly growth and responsible regulation of the Town’s development.

Campbell recognized special visitors to the meeting from Boy Scout Troop 600. They were visiting the meeting to learn more about their local government and how it functions.

The Town officially designated Wednesday, Oct. 31 for the observance of Halloween and established a curfew for the public to comply. Trick-or-Treating will be allowed between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. for children 12 and under. Children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by and supervised by an adult.

In administrative matters, Council declared surplus property of Public Works truck; approved Tax Releases; reappointed Mollie Glenn and Andrew Robinson to the Zoning Board of Adjustment; approved revised Golden Leaf contract for the Rescue and Fire Facility project; approved the monthly financial report; and authorized the mayor to sign the contract with PARTF for the Greene’s Lake and Conservation Park Project.

Eddie Madden, Town Manager, indicated that all the Town departments were collecting data and information for reporting to FEMA for reimbursement for Hurricane Florence.

The “Cycle NC” event is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5. Elizabethtown has been chosen as the host town and 1,200 cyclists are expected to visit.
