The Elizabethtown Airport terminal building will soon be relocated to make room for a new terminal building. Work has begun to prepare the building to travel further down the runway where it will be repurposed for use as an office building, said Elizabethtown Town Manager Eddie Madden.

“The new terminal building will be constructed on the site of the old terminal building,” said Madden. The town is expected to open bids for the construction of the new terminal facility on Thursday.

Twin State Small Structure Movers, LLC were awarded the contract to move the existing terminal building south of its current location during the Elizabethtown Town Council’s May meeting.

The time frame to complete the construction of the new facility is expected to be 10 months. Madden said the new facility will be “very functional” with classroom space which can be used for flight schools or by the community as meeting space. It will also feature a pilot’s lounge, a conference room, a lobby, office space,  restroom facilities, and storage.  The project is being funded through a $1.2 million grant package.

It was decided to move the old terminal building to the Elizabethtown Public Works Building located on Swanzy Street to serve as office space. Those plans had to be abandoned due to costly restrictions imposed on the move by Duke Energy.

A second proposal was made to move the building further south of its current location along the airport runway and repurpose it for office space. Town Manager Eddie Madden told the Council during the May meeting there has been some interest expressed by one business in the old facility once it has been relocated.

There is also work being performed on the airport taxiway which is also being funded through grants totaling $1.4 million, according to Madden.
