Staff report
The organizers of the Elizabethtown Christmas Parade are inviting the community to reflect on “What does Christmas in Elizabethtown mean to you?” The parade, scheduled for Sunday, December 1, at 4 p.m., will start at Town Hall, followed immediately by the Christmas Tree Lighting on the Bladen County Courthouse lawn.
This year’s theme, “Christmas in Elizabethtown,” was announced by Terri Dennison, Director of Communications and Marketing for Elizabethtown. “We hope to see creative and original floats that interpret this theme. It’s a challenge, as the floats become more imaginative each year,” Dennison shared. Last year’s Best Float award went to Artworks with Donna, whose float featured students dressed as elves playing around a gingerbread house, created by art teacher Donna Melvin.
A few guidelines accompany this festive event: Santa Claus will not be allowed on any float, as he will make a special appearance at the end of the parade to help with the Tree Lighting.
New this year, businesses and organizations have the opportunity to sponsor one of the five Shriner groups for a $500 donation. “The Shriner brigades provide great entertainment and are a parade favorite,” Dennison noted, adding that a significant portion of the sponsorship will support the Shriners’ charitable causes.
Entry applications for the parade are now available on the Town’s website at www.elizabethtownnc.org. Non-profit and government entries are free, while other entries cost $35 ($45 after November 18). Pre-decorated float rentals, which include a driver and banners, are also available for $450. The deadline for entries is November 22.
