The town of Elizabethtown is beginning the efforts to clean up and begin the process to recover from Hurricane Florence. On Monday morning power was beginning to return to the town.

Elizabethtown Town Manager, Eddie Madden, said the power has been restored to a portion of the downtown and Duke Energy indicated they would have service restored to the rest of downtown by 11:45 p.m. Monday, September 17, 2018.

“I want to give credit to our street department and water and wastewater personnel. They did an exceptional keeping the streets clean and the water and wastewater operating throughout the duration of this storm,” said Madden.

Madden also indicated the town did experience flooding in several locations including Glenwood Drive, East Hills subdivision, Richardson Street, Martin Luther King Drive, Peanut Road, Airport Road, Mercer Mill Road and Cromartie Road.

The Elizabethtown Fire Department assisted in several rescue calls out in the county including assisting Bladenboro and Clarkton.

Madden said the fire department also took their “Deuce,” which is a retired forest service military-type vehicle and assisted several dialysis patients who were being evacuated to Southern Pines. Madden said the fire department helped to get the patients across a section of deep very water the dialysis vehicle could not cross and got the patients safely to transportation waiting on the other side to take them for their lifesaving treatments.

He added that town officials are expecting the Cape Fear River flooding to affect Tory Hole Park and Lock and Dam No. 2 but not expect it to have an impact on businesses and residents.

Madden said the town has had no issues with flooding and everyone has abided by the curfew. The curfew remains in place from 8 p.m. until 7 a.m. daily.
