As a show of broad base support for the remediation of the water quality issue at White Lake, Elizabethtown Town Council adopted a resolution of support to be forwarded to the State Legislative delegation in Raleigh. White Lake is pursuing a 90% grant from the state. Elizabethtown, as well as Bladen County, has been asked to contribute toward the matching funds to strengthen their application. Council approved a $10,000 contribution.

White Lake Mayor Goldston Womble gave an update on the current Lake issues. Womble stated White Lake has taken a two-fold approach to the Lake quality issue. The first is a long term solution as to why there is an increase in the pH level in the water. Resources have been hired to study this and hopefully come up with long term solutions.

The second is dealing with the short term water clarity. A firm has been hired to administer low dose Alum treatments to the water which will cause the excessive algae to fall to the bottom, thus clearing the water. They have had 4 days of treatment so far which is being funded by the Town.

They encountered some problems with fish kill prior to the Alum treatments. The State has done some testing and will give a report Tuesday. Womble indicated he hoped the treatments will resume Tuesday. He is looking forward to the start of a great season and thanked Elizabethtown for their support.

A public hearing was conducted regarding the proposed Code of Ordinance Amendment for Cemeteries. After no public comments the Council approved the changes which include a stone or burial marker required for any burial and allowing remains of two people to be interred on one burial space.

Council declared a modular building at 300 E. Broad Street as surplus and authorized the building to be advertised on govDeals.com.

Council also proclamed May 13-19th as National Police Week.

In administrative matters, Council approved tax write-offs, monthly financial report; approved audit contract with Thompson, Price, Scott, Adams and Company; and revised the demolition bid for the old Cheverolet Dealership Building from the $82,800 to Old Fields Construction to add an additional $20,900 for asbestos removal.

In observance of Memorial Day, the Town offices will be closed on Monday, May 28th.
