The Elizabethtown Town Council held its noon work session on Monday afternoon. The meeting opened with the feting of Councilman Howell Clark for his birthday.

Elizabethtown Police Chief Tony Parrish introduced two new officers to the board. They are Melanie Avant and Joshua Pittman. Mayor Sylvia Campbell presented them with Town of Elizabethtown employee pins.

The council discussed proposed handicap parking spaces in the downtown. Mayor Campbell said a request was made to add handicap spaces for vans. Mayor Campbell suggested the council look at the space on the corner near Kinlaw Furniture. Public works Director Pat DeVane said it would cost about $2,500 for the necessary curb and gutter for the parking space.

After further discussion, it was determined that the town is in compliance with the ADA requirements and it was decided to forego a tour of proposed sites in the downtown.

Chief Parrish briefly updated the board with regard to three officers who are being promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He told the board he has created a new promotional process and the three officers have successfully completed the requirements.  The officers will be presented to the board and sworn in as Sergeants at the meeting this evening are Willie Thompson, Thomas Davis, and Jeromy Martin.

The board discussed briefly a special use permit application for the construction of a Hardees Restaurant at 213 S. Poplar Street.  The board will vote at the evening session tonight.

The board discussed a rezoning request from Anne Purdie and Maceo Purdie for a parcel located on Mercer Mill-Brown Marsh Road from Residential-Agriculture to Bypass Commercial.  If the rezoning request is approved, the land will be used to erect a billboard site.

The original public hearing for the rezoning request was held at the June 6 meeting.

Planning Technician Billie Hall told the board that there were two certified protests and one letter which was uncertified due to the time it was received.

The board will vote on the request at the evening meeting.

Elizabethtown Fire Chief Nick West told the board that the fire department has a surplus 1987 equipment truck and the department is requesting to have the truck declared as surplus. The council will vote on the matter at tonight’s meeting.

The council set Tuesday, Sept. 6, as the date for the September Council meeting.
