Elizabethtown Town Council held a reconvened meeting Monday evening. The first order of business was approving a resolution to name the bridge on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in memory of Mr. James C. Batchelor Jr. Mr. Gary Rhoda submitted a formal request to Council last week, but they could not act on the request at that time.

According to the resolution read by Mayor Sylvia Campbell, “J.C. exhibited a life of compassion and dedication to the Elizabethtown Community by his 20 years of service on the Zoning Board of Adjustment and 6 years on the Planning Board. He was also the first Black firefighter and police officer. Throughout his lifetime of living and working in Elizabethtown with his wisdom, knowledge and love for the Town, Mr. Batchelor earned the respect of the Elizabethtown community and has long been remembered as a friend by fellow citizens.”

The resolution will be presented to the NC Department of Transportation Board for their approval.

Council tabled a resolution to declare C.A. Nails Building as surplus and to authorize the advertisement for sealed bids for the sale of the property. After further research, Town Attorney Goldston Womble and Fire Chief Nick West will make a presentation to the Council regarding their recommendations.

In other business, the Town’s contract with Waste Industries for solid waste and recycling collection services expires June 30, 2022. An amendment to the contract is being presented to extend the contract for 3 more years with no increase to the Town. This is the first of two amendments that will reflect no cost increase for a savings of $8,500 per year. The contract amendment was approved as presented.

Council entered into Closed Session for the purposes of Real Estate and Personnel.

The next monthly meeting is scheduled for April 19th.
