Dixie Youth BaseballRight-hander Ty Mathis pitched a 4-hitter and struck out 13 batters to lead the Blue Jays to an 11-4 victory over the Orioles in the Elizabethtown Dixie Youth Baseball Minor League Tournament Championship Friday night.

The Orioles scored a first inning run as Walker Ward beat out an infield hit and came around to score on a throwing error.

The Blue Jays pulled even in the top of the second. Carson Gooden drew a lead-off walk, and Timothy McLean reached on an error. Walks to Andrew Horne and Jacob Barnes forced home Gooden with the tying run.

A 4-run third-inning put the Blue Jays ahead to stay. Walks to Nathan Howell, Evan Pait and Mathis loaded the bases, before Gooden cleared the bases by launching a drive over the right-fielder’s head for a 3-run double. Gooden raced home on a wild pitch to up the count to 5-1.

In the home half of the third, Ward rifled a one-hopper past shortstop and the ball rolled to the fence as Walker circled the bases to trim the deficit to 5-2.

The Blue Jays tacked on 2 runs in the fourth. Pait reached on an error, and Mathis walked. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Gooden brought them home by lining a 2-run single to right-centerfield.

Lee Barnes started the Orioles’ fourth inning with a single to right-centerfield and came around to scored on a throwing error to narrow the gap to 7-3.

A 4-run sixth-inning boosted the Blue Jay lead to 11-3. Pait reached on an infield hit, and Mathis and Gooden reached on errors as Pait scored. McLean then slammed a 3-run home run past the left-fielder.

Catcher Garrison Tatum hammered a triple to right-centerfield to begin the Oriole sixth and galloped home on a wild pitch with the final run.

Coleman Tatum struck out nine in 4 innings on the mound for the Orioles, and Ward struck out five in his 2 innings of work. However eleven walks and four errors proved costly for the Orioles.

Ward batted 2-2 with the home run to lead the Oriole hitters. Garrison Tatum cracked the triple, and Bailey Williams and Barnes added one hit each.

Gooden batted 2-3 with a double and five runs batted in to lead the Blue Jay hitters. McLean blasted the 3-run homer, and Pait had the winners’ other hit.
