Elizabethtown Fire Chief Nick West has been hired as Columbus County assistant county manager, The News Reporter of Whiteville reported Friday afternoon.

West joins former Elizabethtown Town Manager Eddie Madden in the Columbus County government offices. Madden became Columbus County manager earlier this year.

West had been Elizabethtown fire chief since 2014. He came to Elizabethtown from the Fayetteville Fire Department.

“I’m really excited to be joining (Columbus) county,” West told The News Reporter. “It’s really a great time.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here in Elizabethtown,” West told the paper. “[This] is an opportunity to move closer to home, and Columbus County is home. There’s a lot of wonderful things happening and it’s been one of my goals to help Columbus County. I think I can join the team and help Columbus County prosper … and I look forward to it. I love it here and it’s where I want to be.”

West is expected to begin work in Columbus County on Oct. 18.
