Saturday morning the Brown’s Creek Trail and Bike Park was the site of much excitement as the Elizabethtown Rotary Club held their third annual 8K Trail Run and Walk to benefit USO of NC. The skies were sunny and bright and the temperatures while cool, were just right for a brisk morning run.
The cool temperatures didn’t dampen the enthusiasm shown by the competitors nor the representatives of the USO of NC who were present to lend their support to the event and to cheer on the runners and walkers.
Race winners were:
Women’s Division Overall
Caitlin Cavanaugh with a time of 41 minutes 10 seconds
Kimberly Slode with a time of 44 minutes 11 seconds
Molly Cherry with a time of 46 minutes 48 seconds
Men’s Division Overall
Jason Bryant with a time of 36 minutes 41 seconds
Dan Meeks with a time of 36 minutes 41 seconds
Dean Hilton with a time of 38 minutes 33 seconds
Youth Division Overall
Gracyn Martin with a time of 48 minutes 23 seconds
Caleb Williams with a time of 50 minutes 32 seconds
Karson Shugart with a time of 53 minutes 47 seconds
The winning Relay Team consisted of Eddie Madden, Elliott Madden and Wes Johnson.
The race course measured just over 5 miles for those that ran the entire distance. For the relay teams, the first leg of the relay measured about 2.5 miles and the other two legs measured about one mile each.
Also, the Elizabethtown Fire Department offered games and competitions for the children at the event. Joy the Clown was also in attendance with her Dove and offering face painting for the children.
Rotary President Renee Horton welcomed competitors and spectators alike to the event. She told those gathered that USO provides much needed to support to military members and their families.
The platinum sponsors for the event were Ford of Clinton and Healthworks Fitness and Wellness of Elizabethtown
Horton thanked Rotary Event Chairman Eddie Madden and his committee members for their work on the event.
The Paul R. Brown Leadership Academy presented the colors and Alyssa Belle sang the national anthem.
Mayor Sylvia Campbell welcomed everyone to Elizabethtown and to the event.
“We thank everyone for taking part,” said Campbell.
She also thanked the USO for what they do to support our military members and their families.
Campbell also offered thanks to the Elizabethtown Rotary Club for their efforts in the community.

Renee Lane of USO of NC thanked everyone and expressed gratitude for being allowed to take part in the event.

Brigadier Gen. Retired Ferdinand Irizarry thanked the USO for their support of everyone.

General John Cervanka on said “On behalf of the service we express our thanks to Rotary for this event. You are truly making a difference.”
There was also a presentation of gift baskets from the town of Elizabethtown to the USO.
