EtownRotaryELIZABETHTOWN — The Elizabethtown Rotary Club held its quarterly business meeting on Wednesday and welcomed new member Harvey Schultz to the club.

Schultz is a chiropractor with Schultz and Ellis Chiropractic Center.

President Renee Horton got the business underway by briefly discussing N.C. Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program. The program allows civic groups, businesses and private individuals to adopt sections of highway and keep them clean by periodically picking up litter, according the NCDOT website. There is a short training session that will be required if the group chooses to pursue the matter.

According to the NCDOT website, each individual participant in the group must watch a safety video before taking part in a clean up. The website also states that a clean up report must be submitted after each clean up and that both sides of the roadway within the designated must be cleaned periodically. Also, when a group adopts a section of highway, they must agree to clean it for a period of four years, according to the NCDOT website.

Horton also announced the club’s new officers for the coming year. They are Paul Norris Immediate Past President, Harvey Iwerks will serve as treasurer, Tiina Mundy will serve as club programs director, Greg Martin will serve as Rotary Foundation Chair, Charlotte Smith and Erin Smith will share duties for Public Relations/Publicity, Jose Rodriguez will serve as secretary, Eddie Madden will serve as fundraising director, and Roy Allen will serve as sergeant-at-arms. Charlotte Smith will also serve as president-elect.

Horton also talked to those in attendance about teamwork and looking ahead for future projects and opportunities for the group to serve in the community.

“I’m a believer in teamwork,” said Horton.

She also touched on the idea of trading banners with other clubs when one has the opportunity to attend a meeting hosted by another club. The banners to be traded are small replicas of the club’s official banner.
