Elizabethtown Rotary President-elect Anne Beyer attended a Rotary training session and during that training session, she learned about global grants. While attending the training session on grants, she met fellow Rotarian Nancy Barbeee who serves as the Global Grants Chair for Rotary.  Rotarian Barbee spoke to the members of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club regarding global grants during their luncheon meeting on Wednesday at Cape Fear Vineyard and Winery.

Rotarian Barbee shared her experience as a Rotarian. She said when she first joined the Mocksville Rotary Club, she had no idea just how much rotary does both locally and on national and global scale. Rotarian Barbee siad that when she had opportunity to attend a President Elect Training session, she learned more about Rotary International and it mission.

Rotarian Barbee said when she attended the PETS training session for the very first time, she learned about other clubs and the projects and fundraisers they were taking part in within their communities. She said she also learned about RYLA,and about grants.

Rotarian Barbee said when she returned form her training session, she was energized and shared with her club what she had learned. Rotarian Barbee said her club began to become involved in things they had never been involved with perviously.  One of the areas her club became involved with is grants—more specifically global grants. Her club  has been involved in 10 global grants.

Rotarian Barbee said global grants are generally done to assist other countries with needs, but they can also be done in your own community. For example, her club took part in a global grant in their own community where they partnered with several different groups such as churches and the United Way in support of Back Pack Buddies.

Rotarian Barbee shared an exciting opportunity coming up for global grants called Community Gardens Grants. She said it was inspired when  Vanessa Irvin, a former Rotary District Governor, met man from Conetoe who is a pastor. He has a two acre community garden where he raises organic foods and he also raises honey bees.  The new grant program begins on July 1.

Also, Rotary President Charlotte Smith reminded members that on May 31, the Elizabethtown and Bladenboro Rotary Clubs will be partnering to conduct a program to honor World War II veterans. Rotarian Darrell Page updated the club about his recent visit with the Bladenboro Rotary Club to continue plans for the event.
