Elizabethtown will soon be getting a Bed and Breakfast. Chris Adams is planning to open the Elizabethtown Inn at 105 Cromartie Street in the John A. McDowell House.

According to a plaque on the house, the home was constructed about 1834.

Adams said that the Elizabethtown Inn is slated to open on April 15 and the Inn is booked for April 22 and April 23.

Adams said the Inn will feature six rooms and a room for meetings and receptions. He said the Inn will initially employee three people on a part-time basis.

When asked how the idea was formed, Adams said that about two and one-half years ago he decided to move back to Bladen County after residing in Wake County.

Adams said he began to look at houses that were available on the market and this particular home caught his attention.

“Kitty Nye showed it to me,” said Adams.

He said as he thought more about it, Adams decided to go and talk to Town Manager Eddie Madden.

Adams said the more research he did, he decided to take things one step at the time.

He said he has in mind to do something similar for quite some time and this home presented the perfect opportunity.

“Back in high school I would work for John and Becky Melvin at their hotel in White Lake. I’ve always said that was the most fun job I’ve ever had,”said Adams.

He said that in the Elizabethtown area there are so few choices for accommodations. Adams pointed out that there are some hotels at White Lake, there are cabins for rent at Lu Mil Vineyard, and soon cabins will be available for rent at Cape Fear Vineyard and Winery, but there is no large chain hotel in Bladen County.

Adams said while it is not a large number of rooms, he hopes to fulfill a need he sees in Bladen County.
