The Goody’s Store located at 314 S. Poplar Street in Elizabethtown was the victim of a break-in on Tuesday night. Elizabethtown Police Officers Joe Butler and Jennifer Popynick responded to the alarm call and saw the doors were broken out, said Lt. Mark McMichael.

“One of the officers requested the Sheriff’s Office K-9 to come out to ensure no one was in the building,” said Lt. McMichael.

When officers entered the building they found several items on the floor including cologne and the watches appeared to have been gone through, said Lt. McMichael.

Officer Popynick patrolled the area and saw an individual walking in the area. Lt. McMichael said when the store manager arrived and officers reviewed the security camera video, Officer Popynick recognized the man on the video as the person she saw walking in the area.

Lt. McMichael said officers found the individual at a nearby gas station, wearing the same clothing as the man in the security camera footage. DeWayne Rogers of Elizabethtown was searched for weapons and officers found knife and a watch in a pocket.

Lt. McMichael said Rogers claimed he had owned the watch for a while but it still had evidence of packaging on it.

Rogers was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and possession of stolen property.
